The Flames Of Heaven?

Last week Debbie Woodrow of New Forest, Hampshire, England, was watching the coals burn in her fireplace when she saw the image of Jesus materialize on the back wall of the hearth. “A halo appeared round the head – which looked like a crown of thorns. For it to happen over Christmas was amazing,” she said. She hasn’t had a fire since because, “We don’t want it to go.” And it saves on coal expenses.

Trial By Fire(place)

It was Easter Sunday and Connie Lopez of Refugio, Texas, was crying and praying in her dining room. When she looked up she thought she saw an image of the Virgin Mary in a stone above the gas fireplace. “It wasn’t there in December when we were decorating it,” she says. She was called inside and forgot about the image until April 19 when fellow parishioners came over for a spaghetti dinner and one of them saw it. Since then more than 200 people from at least 26 Texas cities have dropped by to see the stone. Some see Jesus, other angels, Our Lady of Guadalupe, or the pope. Viewing hours are 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, at 406 Ymbacion St., Refugio, Texas.

Hot For Jesus

Two weeks ago a fire destroyed Christine York’s house in Yuba County, California. When she went back in to see what she could salvage, she found her grandmother’s rosary was intact, as was a statue of the Virgin Mary which was still filled with holy water. Feeling desperate, she said, “Lord I can’t carry it no more. I need help.” She turned around and, there on the wallpaper, was the image of Jesus Christ. She cut it out, framed it, and is keeping it, in spite of already being offered $10,000 for it.

Wooden You Know It

Kevin Morgan of Cheatham County, Tennessee, bought a piece of Bethlehem Olive wood from Jerusalem so he could make a wooden pen. It’s a hobby of his. He was about to toss a scrap of it in the fire when his wife saw the likeness of the Virgin Mary, hands clasped in prayer. Morgan says he’ll consider selling the piece if the price is right, which means it will at least have to be more than the $4 he paid for the whole piece of wood in the first place.

A Smokin’ Mary

When Veronica Dennis of Mexico, Maine removed a framed painting from her kitchen wall after a fire last January, she discovered the wall was blackened by smoke and fire…in the image of the Virgin Mary. She vowed she’d never sell the apparition but after being out of work for three months she changed her mind and the section of wall is on eBay with a starting bid of $2,500 and, with a few hours left, no takers. Smokin’!

Giving Satan Equal Time

Lucky the turtle was the only animal to survive a pet store fire in Indiana. Store owner Bryan Dora says that, as a result, the image of Satan appeared on the turtle’s shell, complete with goatee and pointy horns. Amazingly, he’s produced a DVD of the turtle’s story and plans to auction it — and Lucky — online. So far the closest thing on eBay is a “Turtle Towel Personalized Dora Print,” perfect for drying off possessed reptiles. At left is a non-artist’s rendering of what we imagine Lucky’s shell looks like. After the DVD release we’ll find out for sure.
