Trial By Fire(place)

It was Easter Sunday and Connie Lopez of Refugio, Texas, was crying and praying in her dining room. When she looked up she thought she saw an image of the Virgin Mary in a stone above the gas fireplace. “It wasn’t there in December when we were decorating it,” she says. She was called inside and forgot about the image until April 19 when fellow parishioners came over for a spaghetti dinner and one of them saw it. Since then more than 200 people from at least 26 Texas cities have dropped by to see the stone. Some see Jesus, other angels, Our Lady of Guadalupe, or the pope. Viewing hours are 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, at 406 Ymbacion St., Refugio, Texas.

Veronica Weary says not everyone can see the image but many claim “to have felt love radiating from the glass cabinet it was stored in.” So far no one has proposed to the glass cabinet.

Dressing Up For Church

According to a Romanian couple, images of Jesus, St. Peter, and St. Paul have appeared on a wardrobe they received from her parents as a dowry 50 years ago. The images first showed up just before Christmas last year, starting as shadows and getting progressively clearer every day. Since then their house has become a popular stop on the Eastern European Sightings Tour 2005. They hope to get an Internet connection soon so they can sell it on eBay.

Divine Dumpling

Donna Lee of Point Place, Ohio, was cooking pierogis for Easter dinner when she noticed that one of them came out of the frying pan with the image of Jesus Christ burned into it. Seventeen people bid for it on eBay, with the winner, uh, forking over $1,775 for it. And that’s without even knowing whether it’s filled with meat, cheese, or vegetables. GoldenPalace.com is the proud owner, adding it to their growing collection.
